WHAT IS A PEER SPECIALIST SUPERVISOR?
A Peer Specialist Supervisor (PSS) is someone who provides ongoing guidance and oversight to certified peer specialists after they obtain their credentials. A PSS ensures that peer specialists are delivering recovery-oriented services ethically and effectively — supporting them in skill development, ethical decision-making, professional growth, and administrative responsibilities.
This supervisory role extends beyond individual sessions. It often includes supporting peer specialists in understanding organization-specific policies and navigating workplace expectations. Because Texas requires consistent supervision for all certified peer specialists, the PSS role is not just important — it’s essential to how peer support functions statewide.

This 16-hour certification training gives qualified behavioral health professionals the tools and frameworks needed to supervise certified peer specialists with confidence. You’ll learn how to validate the peer role within your organization, model recovery-oriented values, and serve as a change agent for peer support culture — all while ensuring quality and ethical service delivery.
From recovery principles to supervision frameworks, you’ll graduate with the competencies Texas peer specialists and employers depend on.
What You’ll Learn:
- How to understand recovery as a nonlinear process and apply SAMHSA’s four dimensions throughout your supervision practice
- The difference between peer support and other helping professions — and how to protect and reinforce those unique values in your workplace
- How to generate role validity through individual supervision, observation, and group sessions that prevent role co-option
- How to apply the Texas Peer Specialist Code of Ethics using a clear decision-making framework for complex supervisory situations
- How to support peer specialists through documentation, fair staff development, and accommodations that honor the integrity of the peer role
WHO IS THIS TRAINING FOR?
- Qualified Clinical Consultants (QCC) or Licensed Healthcare Practitioners (LPHA) who supervise peer specialists in behavioral health settings
- QMHP-CS or Qualified Peer Specialists (QPS) working under appropriate supervision and ready to step into a leadership role
- Behavioral health supervisors new to overseeing peer specialists who need specialized training in peer support values
- Program directors implementing peer services who want to ensure quality supervision and organizational culture alignment
- Anyone responsible for providing the weekly supervision required by the Texas Administrative Code for peer specialist certification

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
To enroll in the PSS certification training, you must meet one of the following professional qualifications:
Option 1: Be a QCC, LPHA, QMHP supervised by a QCC or LPHA, or a QPS supervised by a QCC or LPHA
Option 2: Hold a high school diploma or GED and have at least 4 years of work experience as a peer specialist
Option 3: Hold an Associate degree or higher and have at least 2 years of work experience as a peer specialist
Additional Requirements:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be able to pass a background check per Texas Administrative Code guidelines
- Demonstrate current self-directed recovery
- Be willing to follow the ethical standards set for peer specialist supervisors under the Texas Administrative Code
- Be a Texas resident or spend at least 51% of your working time in Texas, in-person or remotely
CERTIFICATION STEPS
Getting PSS certified in Texas is straightforward and can typically be completed within a few weeks:
- Confirm Your Eligibility — Review the professional qualification options and additional requirements above to make sure you qualify before enrolling
- Complete the 2-Day Training — Attend our virtual PSS training and pass the knowledge assessment at the end of the course — this is required before you can submit your state application
- Submit Your State Application — After training, apply through Certemy (the Texas Certification Board’s online platform). Create your account, complete all 10 required steps including a federal background check, and wait for TCB approval

Regalado Recovery & Self-Discovery, Inc. does not conduct background checks and has no involvement in the state’s certification or background check process.
